Exchange 2003 smtp relay, devices not listed in "granted" but still working?
Hello, I'm puzzled by this problem and wanted to ask the group. We have an Exchange 2003 server that is used for SMTP from devices such as print scanner and some servers that send out messages. I'm a contractor here so I don't know the history but on the previous scanners they all used the SMTP server of "mailcalifornia". Soon we had two more scanners to install and once I put in the same SMTP server name of "mailcalifornia" one e-mail would work but then it would have an error sending. I found out that only by using our external SMTP gateway would e-mails forward. I knew there was some access list that was not set for the new devices, reason why the older devices were working. But after checking the SMTP virtual server settings, under "relay restrictions" I didn't find anything except a handful of old server IP's. What is even strange, I couldn't find any IP's of our old scanners that are working using "mailcalifornia". I also checked the global message delivery settings and again, nothing there either. To test, I ran a SMTP test message from a new server, it failed right after I connected to "mailcalifornia". Once I added the server IP address to the "relay restrictions" it worked and I was able to send out a test message. What I don't understand is how are the older scanners working if they are not listed on either SMTP access list? Recently one of the older scanners that was working for years is now receiving SMTP access denied, making me wonder if something was changed. Any comments or suggestions are greatly welcome! Thanks, Rob

If they are sending to an internal recipient, then the relay settings do not have any affect. The server isn't relaying, it is accepting email for a user that it is responsible for. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP. http://blog.sembee.co.uk , http://exbpa.com/
